1K a year Job Summary Cultivate the design, care, and presentation of a wide variety of plants, landscapes, and seasonal displays in assigned areas.
Occasionally coordinates/oversees/directs the team with other projects in the garden.
Applies industry standard horticultural principles and landscape maintenance techniques to ensure the highest horticulture standards and visitor experience.
Duties and Responsibilities Assess areas regularly and implement maintenance tasks.
Oversee installation, management, and maintenance of plant displays.
Demonstrate and train staff about proper application of best horticultural practices that include, but are not limited to:
fertilizing, pruning, weed control, proper moisture levels, and pest management utilizing organic and sustainable practices.
Assist the Director of Horticulture in organizing and scheduling maintenance projects on a weekly and seasonal basis.
This may also involve coordinating with other Horticulturists for staffing large projects.
Identify and coordinate volunteer needs to assist staff with projects and garden maintenance.
Identify projects and areas in need of renovation; develop plans, obtain approval, and coordinate project execution with the Director of Horticulture.
Assist Director of Horticulture with design development for seasonal outdoor displays.
Maintain accurate records and create weekly activity reports.
Interact professionally with visitors, volunteers, and staff.
Promote the garden by presenting in-house workshops and presentations in other forums that provide outreach opportunities to community and other organizations, including occasionally guiding tours in the garden.
Participate in miscellaneous projects such as display setups, freeze protection, hurricane preparation, Foundation events, special projects, and other duties as needed.
Leadership Responsibilities The incumbent in this position oversees the work of two to three members of the garden team as well as volunteers.
Other leadership responsibilities include training employees and volunteers, planning, assigning, and directing work.

Experience A minimum of two years professional work experience in the horticulture industry is required, preferably in public gardens or residential landscapes.
Some leadership experience including coordinating/directing work assignments preferred.
Education An Associate?s or Bachelor?s degree in horticulture, botany or a closely related field is preferred.
Interpersonal Skills Requires contact with individuals and teams and working with others in a group or team.
Job tasks are sometimes performed in close physical proximity to other people.
Requires working with members of the public.
May require dealing with dissatisfied, unpleasant, or discourteous people, including conflict resolution.
Requires ability to display tact and discretion, consistent demonstration of good judgment, and an ability to listen and learn.
Requires ability to be proactive while always thinking before acting.
Ability to interact professionally and appropriately with visitors, volunteers, co-workers, Foundation staff, vendors and others in a polite yet prudent manner.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Working knowledge of annuals, perennials, woody plants, and native plants with a desire to broaden the plant diversity in the gardens.
Knowledge of sustainable practices and organic materials.
Familiar with safe operation of hand and power tools.
Excellent time management, organization, and prioritization skills.
Written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals and take direction.
Must be a team player able to work comfortably and effectively in cross-functional teams and contribute to building a positive team spirit.
Work is performed in areas of frequent visitor interaction and requires excellent customer service while balancing need for productivity.
Able to work independently and with a team within normal duties and responsibilities.
Flexible and able to adjust to changing priorities.
Valid driver?s license and good driving record.
Basic computer skills (MS Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
Physical Demands Regularly required to use power and non-power tools, equipment, bagged and bulk materials, and agricultural products.
Work requires frequent standing, bending, kneeling, operating landscape equipment, reaching for objects, using a ladder, etc.
May be required to move, push, pull or lift objects frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, particularly the high humidity and temperatures of Southeast Texas; may include some occasional greenhouse work.
